On top of the 88 beaches surrounding the City of Cape Town, there are also 35 public pools. But while the beaches have lifeguards for days because that’s just their natural element, to ensure safety for the upcoming season, the City is looking for more than 200 temporary lifeguards so look after the public pools.
While they haven’t made this announcement public, one of our own found it through South Africa’s fastest growing social network for neighbours, OurHood.
But is it the job you want to do for summer? Well, while rumours have it that the job pays between R40 – R50 / hour, it’s better than most. Maybe. Here’s the list of public pools you could find yourself placed at:

If you’re feeling a bit unfit, you have the chance to go to a few training sessions, every Wednesday and Friday afternoons from 14:00 to 16:00, until 3 June 2016.
The peak summer season is the busiest time of the year for us, with thousands flocking to our swimming pools to cool off. Swimming pools reached a peak of more than 1 million bathers during this past peak period, making it one of the busiest seasons in a decade due to the extremely hot weather experienced. We therefore need to have a team of well trained and competent lifeguards on duty at our amenities to ensure the safety of our patrons.
Residents who meet the criteria for a lifeguard position are encouraged to apply timelessly so as not to lose out on this temporary employment opportunity.
Swimming pools are popular recreational spaces and we need to plan ahead and be well prepared for this busy time of the year.
The main swimming pool season commences in October 2016 and runs until April 2017 (for certain swimming pools, the period may continue until June 2017).
Interested? Maybe we’ll see you at the pool side this summer. Probably not, though.
