If you made it to Cape Town’s first World Sevens tournament back in December you’ll know a good time was had, even if the queues to grab a drink made watching the rugga something of an aside.
Well there’s good news for fans of 7s rugby (and shorter beer queues) in the Mother City then, because the Varsity 7’s rugga is about to hit Cape Town hard.
The event will be held at Villagers Rugby Club this coming weekend (30 April to 2 May, Monday is a public holiday remember), and the country’s best varsity teams are headed our way to duke it out for the title of 2016 Champions.
Here’s Varsity Sports with more:
Ten universities from across the country will compete at this year’s tournament. They are: University of the Free State (Kovsies), University of Stellenbosch (Maties), NMMU (Madibaz), NWU-Pukke, UP-Tuks, UCT, University of Fort Hare, University of Johannesburg, University of the Western Cape and Walter Sisulu University…
Spectators can expect an array of activities at this year’s Varsity 7s Rugby, from the Steers Chill Zone, to live music and entertainment, with a big screen and some amazing giveaways from sponsors, FNB, Legit, Cell C, Samsung and Steers.
Adding to the thrill of Varsity 7s, this year teams will be allowed to call a Power Play minute. Any try scored by the team during that minute will be doubled from five points to 10.
So expect matches to go down to the wire, even when teams trail by 10 points. Look forward to epic comebacks and 10-pointers. In 2016 the fat lady won’t be singing until the final whistle – no matter how far ahead a team might be.
Word on the street is that you should dress to impress and #showyourcolours, as this is going to be three days of thrilling action that you don’t want to miss. There’s also a Steers Chillzone, smartphone spot prizes and FNB instant cash up for grabs.
Here’s the bit you really want to pay attention to though – if you download the Varsity Sports app (which is available for free, iOS HERE or Android HERE), you can get your hands on a ticket for just R10 which includes a FREE beer or cooldrink on entry.
Pretty lekker hey, and Cell C has sweetened the deal by adding a free 500mb data for those who switch over to the network.
