As time moves forward, you may be one of those South Africans looking for a way out.
But like any moving house scenario, there’s always the issue of finding the right house. Especially if you have found the ideal location already.
Not to worry, there’s an island off Scotland’s west coast up for sale and it includes a house and four acres. It is called Rudh-A-Chruidh and costs less than a London apartment.
For just £950 000 (R19m) you get a helipad, too. The island is linked to the bigger isle of Kerrera, but only by a causeway at low tide, so you may need a boat.
The current owner commissioned Norman Hickson to build a contemporary home which would blend into its environment. And so, the open-plan house was built in 2014, along with underfloor heating, steam room, sauna and master suite with vaulted ceiling and balcony.
The relationship between the building and the water was the most important consideration and I wanted the occupants to stand in the kitchen, look out of the window and feel like the building had its feet in the water.
While the island’s coastline is a blend of shingle beach and rigged rocks, ideal for birdlife, and the ocean life includes spotting of porpoises, dolphins, otters and seals, all you will need is a couple of cows for some fresh milk and you’re sorted.
