Instead of trekking all the way to Spain for the running of the bulls, head over to Stellenbosch to the Vergenoegd Wine Estate for the running of the ducks.
Sure, it’s not as life-threatening, but it has happened twice a day for nearly 30 years.
Now Brits just can’t seem to get enough of it since it hit The Telegraph as “news”. I guess that’s just another reason for them to come all the way out to the peninsula for a holiday.
Here’s the story:
Vergenoegd Wine Estate has employed an army of 800-strong Indian Runner Ducks to sort out its snail and slug problem. Every morning they are released and parade past the manor house and have become something of a tourist attraction.
They are working ducks who contribute towards our aim to implement more environmentally friendly farming practices.
They also contribute towards the fertilization of the vineyards.
We breed them each year. They have been on the Estate for many years and were originally brought in from Asia.
The previous owner of Vergenoegd Wine Estate, John Faure, has an amazing love for feathery birds.
With this love we introduced by our winemaker, Marlize Jacobs who created these easy drinking, every day wines that has been labelled under the Runner Duck Label.
They don’t really interact with the guests as they are a little skittish.
We do though have two Chinese Geese, Rocco and Sunny, that have been hand reared and love being around our guest, even though they can be a little noisy at times.
Cute, hey?
