Rewind twenty years ago and we were smack in the middle of the nineties. During that time some of the best – and worst – music was created.
While some tracks have been buried in the history catalogues, only to resurface for a 2016 electro-house remix, others are glorified for their throwbacks.
Then you get Spotify.
Using data from users’ habits in 2014, data scientist Matt Daniels ploughed through the streaming services’ catalogue of 90s songs and ranked them by their play count.
The data included people of all ages, but features more young people as Spotify’s users are predominantly in their 20s.
Until recently it was impossible to quantify the popularity of older music. But now, Spotify collects a vast amount of data about the bands we crave and how many times we play them. Daniels collaborated with Spotify to collect and analyse all of that data.
So, here are the top ten tracks that Spotify users play on repeat, all from the 90s. Can you even guess which one is top? Poor Kurt.
On a positive note, they really do take one back to better days and each song is pretty damn good. Just shows how the bad popular ones don’t really survive.
