Rumours regarding the Gupta family’s fleeing have been floating around since Rapport reported that the brothers were seen at OR Tambo on their way to Dubai. Heck, even 5FM reported yesterday that they had landed in mainland India.
However, although “Atul Gupta and Varun Gupta resigned their positions at Oakbay Resources on Friday after financial-services groups, including accounting firm KPMG and Barclays Africa Group’s Absa unit, dropped the company and other Gupta-controlled businesses as clients, as questions about the family’s influence over Mr Zuma mounted,” others are saying they have not fled.
One such person is Oakbay Investments CEO Nazeem Howa who insists the family is not hiding:
They are not hiding. They’ve not fled the country.
It’s unprecedented for the four major banks to walk away from an institution.
However, there has been no comment by the family itself on the matter.
