Today was a pretty important day for South African rugby, Allister Coetzee confirmed as the Springbok coach.
It was probably an announcement greeted with a thumping headache by the players who took part in last night’s Varsity Cup final, although they would be drinking for very different reasons.
With Maties leading 6-0 and the clock running down NWU Pukke pressed for the try that would win them the match, and it took them a full 12 minutes inside the Maties 22m before they crossed over the white line.
That’s correct, the clock does say 88 minutes, a series of penalties and some dogged Maties defence meaning the match stretched well past the regulation 80 minutes.
That highlights reel up top doesn’t really do the drama justice – if you feel like sinking your teeth in check out the full account of how the final ended.
