Watching a game of sevens rugby is great: it’s fast paced, doesn’t last long and the clock counts down, making the suspense just that more intense.
As the World Series circuit gains popularity, the Ultimate Rugby Sevens is set to launch its first series of tournaments in Cape Town this Thursday, 14 April.
The twist is that this event will actually be a 5-A-SIDE, so you only need to rustle up a handful of mates and you have yourself a team.
In association with Cafe Caprice and PUMA, the series of events will run for two weeks, with pool matches played on the 14 and 21 April. The finals are going down on Sunday 24th April at the world famous Camps Bay Beach – see, you know you want to watch now.
The Autumn pilot season kicks off what will become multi-venue (beach) series played in Autumn (3 weeks), Spring (6 weeks) and Summer (8 weeks) with a huge one-day festival of beach rugby taking place in February 2017.
The competition is 5-a-side touch rugby, with a slight twist on the rules being that teams must play with a sweeper when defending in the opposition half. With only four players in the defensive line, it leaves a lot of room for teams to exploit the space and play rugby with expression and speed just like the Olympic sport of rugby 7s.
Basically: Beach 5’s full contact 5-a-side rugby. No kicking, scrums or line outs. 2 second rule, lots of tries and a great pleaser.
Autumn Season Dates on Camps Bay Beach:
Thursday 14th April – 5.30-7pm
Thursday 21st April – 5.30-7pm
Sunday 24th April – 1-4.30pm

Too easy to map out your day then: watch some rugby, dabble in some cocktails and a bite to eat at Caprice, watch the sunset go down from the Strip’s hottest spot.
Sevens rugby becomes fives rugby, the kind of sport everyone can enjoy.
