Teenagers are in their own world. From fashion, social media and music trends and interests, you have to be one, or own one, to know what’s going down.
But the most tricky element of them all is the lingo, as when they speak you can’t just open the Oxford Dictionary for references. In fact, half the time you can’t even use Urban Dictionary, the words are so interchangeable.
So we’re going to help you with the top internet slang terms used by those still in high school – because the real cool kids are on a more comprehensible level.
What it means: Something that is pretty f*ing amazing.
For example:
Me: “Did you seen Drake perform with Riri?”
Friend: “Yeah, that performance was lit.”
Replacement:
Think of lit as being groovy, on fire, or breathtaking.
What it means: To metaphorically rake someone through the coals or rather, burn them.
For example:
Me: “My roommate used up the last roll of toilet paper and hasn’t replaced it in three days.”
Friend: “DRAG HER TO THE GROUND.”
Replacement: Drop them, tune them, or insult them.
What it means: A state of completeness and flawlessness, the quality of being perfect, generally referring to eyebrows.
For example:
Me: “I just got my eyebrows done.”
Friend: “They’re on fleek.”
Replacement: On point, ideal, or perfect.
What it means: Referring to good looks, fierceness, or something good, popularised in the gay community. Can refer to you shoes, eyebrows, body, or wardrobe.
For example:
Me: “Have you seen her body since summer?”
Friend: “She got snatched, honey.”
Replacement: Fierce, badass, or sexy.
What it means: To be a fan – stemming from Eminem’s song ‘Stan’ about a fan’s obsession with him.
For example:
Me: “I love 1D!”
Friend: “I’m stanning so hard on them”
Replacement: Fan, fanboy, or fan.
What it means: Just like family, it refers to those close to you, your immediate group of friends.
For example:
Me: “I’m off to see the girls.”
Friend: “Say hi to the fam.”
Replacement: Posse, squad, or friends.
What it means: Unlike keeping it real, keep it means you should hold on to it.
For example:
Me: “What do you think of my new apartment?”
Friend: “Keep it, yo!”
Replacement: It’s cool, it’s a keeper, or it is really nice, you should hold on to it.
