Judgement day is upon us, 11 Constitutional Court judges gathering to answer one of of South Africa’s most pressing and oft-repeated questions.
You’re probably thinking this is just another one of those things JZ can brush off without much worry – you’d be wrong, today’s ruling carrying with it some real and meaningful repercussions.
eNCA outlines those here:
It’s a momentous occasion and they have been asked to decide if the president of the country acted unlawfully, in breach of his oath of office and in flagrant violation of his duty to protect the Constitution…
A court does not have the power to order Parliament or the executive to impeach the president. But if the Constitutional Court finds that President Zuma acted in breach of office or violated the Constitution, it could make it harder for the ANC majority in the National Assembly to overrule impeachment proceedings. And it would be difficult to ignore any serious findings against the person entrusted to uphold and protect the Constitution.
Fingers and toes crossed, let’s make #PayBackTheMoney official.
