It has not been a good day in the Constitutional Court for Jacob Zuma, the ruling just handed down by the 11 sitting judges going pear-shaped right from the start.
As it stands Zuma will have to #PayBackTheMoney, although that amount has yet to be decided. I imagine Thuli Madonsela is wearing a toothy grin right now, with this below from TimesLive:
[Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng] said the president failed in his constitutional obligation when he failed to assist the public protector by complying with her report.
Zuma should have approached the Constitutional Court if he believed that he should not abide by the public protector’s report.
He was not in the position to simply ignore public protector Thuli Madonsela’s findings and should also not have decided to have the issue investigated by police minister Nathi Nhleko.
Here’s Rebecca Davis tweeting about how badly things went for JZ:
The Democratic Alliance were wasting no time, sending out this moments after the ruling:
Before you get really, really excited about this impeachment let’s remember this fact: the only way Zuma can actually be impeached is if the ANC-majority National Assembly votes in favour.
No harm in trying though.
