The Latest World’s Happiest Nation Rankings Are Out And We Don’t Even Make The Top 100

Whoop, South Africa is NOT really happy right now - although I think our people are pretty stoked with life - but here's what makes Denmark "full of smiles". Pfffft.

Well, how about that: Out of the 157 countries that are included in the World Happiness Report 2016 South Africa is sitting pretty at number 107. Yeah guys. That’s how unhappy we are. (Note: our average “happiness status” between 2013 and 2015 places us at 116, so we have come a long way.)

The report ranks countries on a variety of factors:

  • People’s health and access to medical care
  • Family relations
  • Job security
  • Social factors, including political freedom and degree of government corruption.

No wonder we’re so unhappy. Thanks, Guptas.

But what makes Denmark the top country when it comes to happiness?

Denmark, where women hold 43 percent of the top jobs in the public sector, is known for its extensive and generous cradle-to-grave welfare.

Few complain about the high taxes as, in return, they benefit from a health system where everybody has free access to a general practitioner and hospitals.

Taxes also pay for schools and universities, and students are given monthly grants for up to seven years. Many feel confident that if they lose their jobs or fall ill, the state will support them.
