Remember when the “Dad Bod” became a focus as women announced that it was a highly desirable aspect of male’s physique? Well, now it has spread into the modelling world as plus-size models are being given a chance to enter the fashion industry. While most of the focus has been on la female for a while now, an upsetting reality to some (personally, I think it’s because of their damn sexy curves and busty top halves), an international model agency has begun to include plus-size male models.
Labelled under the “brawn” division, their first signed model is Zach Miko, a comedian, musician, blogger and well, model. Check:
Ivan Bart, the senior vice president of IMG Models, said it was partly due to his own experiences that led him to create the model sub division:
I consider myself a beefy, stocky kind of guy or whatever buzzword you want to use. I’m in the fashion business and I’m required to dress fashionably, but yet I have size issues. It becomes defeating when I don’t consider myself morbidly obese, but I go to certain stores they don’t have my size.
Although one male model does not make a revolution, it’s a start. We’ve already had plus-size model Ashley Graham on the cover of a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue in February and agencies are adding more and more women of this “type” to their portfolios.
Here’s what Miko thinks of modelling:
You show up in the morning to a beautiful studio in Tribeca or Soho or some other beautiful abbreviated NYC neighborhood. Then they feed you egg whites, fruit and yogurt with La Colombe coffee. Then you sit in hair and makeup, where an insanely stylish artist makes you look like you’re the lead in a Taylor Swift video, the one where she doesn’t break your heart.
As the only plus-size male model in the industry, he is lucky he hasn’t had to deal with any competition so his experience of the modelling world is definitely from a different side. Go him, though.
