After four months of terror surrounding Rhodes Memorial and UCT campus, the suspected rapist of five victims – and one near victim – was arrested just in the area. What is staggering is that the suspect would frequent the UCT campus wearing a UCT t-shirt and cap. He hid just off the campus on the mountainside near Rhodes Memorial and often visited a nearby petrol station in Newlands.
His give away was that he held onto suspects’ cellphones. Investigators used the cellphones’ tracking device to locate the man – which wasn’t without its own problems. At one point, police located a cellphone in Wellington which then later popped up in Johannesburg – but it is assumed that the suspect got rid of the phone in an effort to divert investigations.
The man apparently went to onto UCT grounds to charge his cellphone.
Using the various cellphones to track the man’s whereabouts, they discovered he was living in the bushes near Rhodes Memorial. At one stage, a device was switched on and he was only 24m away from police and mountain rangers.
They eventually arrested and charged the 34-year-old for the 19 November incident and are looking to connect him to the other incidents.
