How long have we been awaiting the extinction of Nokia? Other than the absolute legit backup Nokia 3310 phone, there’s no need for the company to be in existence. But when you think about the cheapness of those week-long-battery-life phones beyond how they are used for when you have “misplaced” your “smart phone”, you might realise that they’re a criminals dream.
Now, it has appeared that ISIS has a liking to one particular phone – but for a different kind of communication. As part of a study looking at the civilian components in ISIS bombs, research showed that the terror group consistently used Nokia 105 above all others in the manufacture of a specific type of remote controlled IED. Two phones are used in the bomb-making process: one to call the other, which sends a signal to a circuit board and sparks the explosion. BOOM.
All the group needs is a cheap phone that vibrates – and although there are many that offer the same thing, the only reasons researchers could suggest for the use of the Nokia is supply and convenience. It is suspected that they have found a way to gain large quantities of the phone and are either buying or stealing them in bulk.
Also, the group has streamlined the bomb-making process with this particular phone. Diverting would mean more training sessions. What admin.
