In a dramatic unplanned slaughtering, over 200 sheep were killed when a double-decker truck transporting the cargo crashed on the N1 near Vanderbijlpark in the early hours of yesterday morning. At around 4 am, the truck overturned, fatally spilling its cargo onto the roadside. The SPCA arrived on the scene at around 7:30 am:
The accident scene was not very pleasant – live sheep on top and between dead sheep, with severely broken legs, jaws and other injuries.
As most of the sheep were injured, the SPCA had to put them down. However, the owners were not happy:
To make matters worse, the accident happened at 4:00 this morning and the owners refuse to contact the SPCA because they are of the opinion that the SPCA only walks in and destroys all their animals – yes, we will end an animal’s suffering, especially when they have broken legs and jaws!
The SPCA is now taking legal action against the owners for leaving the sheep to suffer. The driver of the truck was unharmed and the surviving sheep were transported to a farm.
Sheep are people, too, you know.
