Back in the middle of February, there were reports going around of a Canadian island inviting Americans to stay if Donald Trump won the presidency – and for good reason, too. Since its mining industry collapsed years ago, the population decline as left quite a bit of opportunities for people to stay, work and get educated. And, if Trump wins, the population of Cape Breton know that it won’t be the simple minded folk deciding to move. Says one dude:
I think Americans drawn up here if Trump became president would be smart, rational Americans. Canada’s population is declining, so it would be nice to have immigration of people ready to contribute to the economy. People would be moving here, purchasing homes, starting businesses, getting jobs because they decide they don’t like this Trump guy and what he stands for. They’re the kind of people we want in this country. So it would be nice to have an influx of people moving here for the right reasons.
So it would be nice, hey?
Normally a magnet for tourists, a local radio DJ made what was at first a spoof website for Americans who wanted to know more about Cape Brenton. But then people actually began calling in with inquiries – I mean, wouldn’t you after you’ve checked out the website. (It’s so slick).
The rush began after #SuperTuesday when Donald Trump won the Republican leg of the race – an historical tell-tale sign of which candidate will run for president for that party. Google searches of “how can I move to Canada” rose 300% that night, rolling onto 1 150% by the end of the following day. I mean, we have even heard of celebs who are looking to leave.
