It’s a different world over there in the NFL – Michael Vick and his dog fighting, the New England Patriots filming their opposition in secrecy, OJ Simpson’s travails, Tom Brady and Deflategate – it just seems like the sport could do with a good clean up.
Enter Dante Fowler, a professional NFL player for the Jacksonville Jaguars. The defensive end is in the midst of a media shitstorm and wow, isn’t it just deserved.
What you’re looking at there is Fowler refereeing a fight between his girlfriend and the mother of his child. Look around the eight second mark, he is clearly indicating that they may commence battle.
In the wake of the video going viral Fowler has released a short statement:
“I am embarrassed and have apologized for my actions to everyone involved.”
“As a family, we have been dealing with this moment and the conflict that led to it since this occurred.”
“The video surfacing is a sad reminder that emotions got the best of all of us. I take 100 percent responsibility for everything that happened.”
The Jacksonville Jaguars with a statement of their own:
“Dante brought the incident to our attention prior to the video being released and was embarrassed and remorseful.”
“Violence of this type against others is unacceptable in our society and to our organization. We will continue to look into the incident while offering resources and providing support to Dante and his family to help them through this private matter.”
You have to wonder whether the NFL is doing enough to educate these young men who are handed multimillion dollar contracts the second they finish college, this just one in a long line of similar incidents.
As long as videos like this surface you’d have to think not.
