Happy birthday Bob, as if the world needed another reminder of just how little you care about the citizens of your country.
Saturday saw the lavish celebrations take place, with the festivities costing the taxpayer around $800 000. I can hear you saying that doesn’t seem too lavish by today’s standards, but remember that this is a country where drought and food shortages have left 2,5 million Zimbabweans in a real spot of bother.
Let’s look at some snaps from the big day then courtesy of CNN:
It was only a few weeks ago that Bob declared several areas in a state of disaster, something he touched on during his birthday speech:
“We are doing our best to feed our nation. … We shall certainly get through this bad patch,” Mugabe said, according to local newspaper the Herald.
However, he said he would not take foreign aid if it meant changing his position against gay marriage.
“If aid is going to be given on the principle that we accept gay marriages, then let that aid stay where it is. It is rotten aid, filthy aid,” Mugabe reportedly said.
The classic biting off the nose to spite the face move, I’m sure those starving give a shit about where the aid that feeds their families come from.
Then there’s the gay marriage chirp – when last did you meet someone you genuinely respected who opposed the union of two men or two women?
South Africa’s complicity in allowing this to go on for so long should also not be overlooked, although I suppose we have enough to worry about here at home without taking on the follies of those up north.
