Chris Rock’s monologue will long be spoken of, his critique of #OscarsSoWhite going down rather well right around the world.
Not that every joke was roundly applauded, with one cameo appearance grabbing headlines for the sheer absurdity of it all. We’re talking about the moment Rock brought Stacey Dash up on stage, although one needs some background info to better understand the joke.
Here’s the Daily Beast with why Dash, a black lady born in the Bronx, is the last person on earth who should champion diversity in Hollywood:
Appearing on Fox & Friends last month, Dash said she found the threats of an Oscar boycott “ludicrous” because it encourage “segregation.”
“If we don’t want segregation, then we need to get rid of channels like BET and the BET Awards and the Image Awards, where you’re only awarded if you’re black,” she told a baffled Steve Doocy. “If it were the other way around, we would be up in arms. It’s a double standard.”
Her comments were quickly embraced by Donald Trump, who told Fox News that he found the interview “amazing,” adding, “I’ve never even thought of it from that standpoint.”
Yeah Donald Trump agreed with her, that’s how racist she is. So just what went down at the Oscars then?
“Let me tell you some good news, the Academy has taken steps to fix this problem,” Rock said after airing a parody montage that found Whoopi Goldberg, Tracy Morgan, and other black actors inserted into some of this year’s lily-white nominated films. “That’s why it is my honor to introduce the new director of our minority outreach program.”
Then he paused and said, “Please welcome miss Stacey Dash.”
But there she was, striding out onto the stage. “I cannot wait to help my people out,” Dash said, giggling to awkward silence. “Happy Black History Month! Thank you.”
It seems like poor Dash didn’t quite realise she was being trolled, posting this online just after the awards ceremony finished:
When they added ME to increase the diversity, I’m sure many black people rolled their eyes. I’m not “black enough,” they say. But guess what? I’ve heard that all my life. I would rather be a free thinking, black than a cookie cutter black who thinks – and votes – just like all my friends.
Yes, I’m the actress from the South Bronx who has always dreamed of winning an Oscar. But God has a great sense of humor and this is my first encounter with one of my dreams of destiny. Bringing diversity to Hollywood… not merely because of color, but politics as well. (After all, different colors of skin is an easy kind of diversity. Ideological diversity is much harder, because it forces everyone to come face to face with actual beliefs. Hollywood needs BOTH.)
Me thinks that Chris Rock was up to no good. That stunned silence from the audience – that was them wondering why the hell Dash would agree to walk out on stage when she was so obviously the butt of the joke.
Another vote for Trump courtesy of Dash then.
