First he came for the Mexicans, then he came for the Muslims – now Donald Trump has turned his sights on none other than Pope Francis.

So it was actually the Pope who fired off the first round, saying yesterday that Trump “is not Christian”. That would be referring to his plans to deport immigrants, build a wall and ban all Muslims from entering the country.

A little of what he said from CNN:

“A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian. This is not the gospel,” the Pope told journalists who asked his opinion on Trump’s proposals to halt illegal immigration.

I’m no expert on the Bible but I’m sure I remember something about treating others how you would like to be treated. Round one to Pope Francis then…

Anyway Donald didn’t take the insults lying down, firing back in a tirade that has to be seen to be believed:

That ISIS man, if Trump ever defeats them how else will he fear monger people into giving him a second term? Perhaps someone had a word in his ear because he softened his tone in the hours that followed:

“I don’t like fighting with the Pope,” Trump said at a GOP town hall debate in South Carolina hosted by CNN. “I like his personality; I like what he represents.”

He added that he thinks Francis’ remarks were “much nicer” than the media reported and that the Pope had been misled by Mexican officials.

Trump also said that the Pope has an “awfully big wall” himself at the Vatican.
