When you campaign for the Republican top dog role you need to remember a few things – guns are good, God is great and homosexuality is an affront to all that is decent in this world.

Cue some redneck shouting out “it was Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve” – these are the principles upon which the party is founded.

Well Jeb Bush certainly remembered that bit about guns when he sent this tweet out yesterday:

GUNS.

That was sent following Bush’s visit to the weapons maker FN Manufacturing in Columbia, South Carolina. The state primaries will take place on Sunday and the PR blitz amongst the candidates is of course relentless.

Not that everyone was on board as ABC reports:

His tweet received more than 7,000 likes and 9,000 retweets within an hour and a half of its posting — a record for his account, whose posts rarely rack up more than 100 retweets.

In response, scores of others posted different photos under the heading “America”, including the wrestler Hulk Hogan playing a guitar, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers pretending to smoke marijuana and former president Ronald Reagan riding a dinosaur.

National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden retweeted Bush’s post with the comment “Delete your account”.

Nice and concise, good stuff Edward. More of the backlash below:

Another pointed out the gun was actually made by a Belgian company.

Others called attention to what President Barack Obama has called an “epidemic” of gun violence.

Several tweets with the caption “America” included photos of the 26 victims of the Sandy Hook School massacre in 2012.

Can we please have a frank conversation with Jeb Bush’s social media manager, I would love to hear the reasoning behind that tweet.
