SONA 2015 will long be remembered as a dark day for South Africa, violent scenes breaking out in parliament as security guards evicted politicians and Zuma sat back and watched the institution of parliament take a beating.
Take a moment to digest this photo below, security guards and officials looking on horrified as the leader of the country can barely contain his giddy excitement. A picture that really does speak a 1000 words, most of which can’t be repeated here…
We’re going to give you a run through of last year’s festivities as we covered them so you can pick and choose which to give a watch.
First we’ll start off with the basics, Jacob Zuma’s speech in full (HERE).
We know you came here for the drama though, which is why next up is the EFF members being thrown out of parliament and the fighting that ensued. There are two videos worth watching HERE, just to remind you of the mess in case it’d slipped your mind.
Then I’m going to embed this video for the sheer incredulity of what it represents, JZ returning to the podium after the EFF had been ejected.
Something tells me he will be doing less giggling at this year’s affairs. Don’t forget that the DA also exited parliament, although they did so willingly (HERE).
There were more unsavoury scenes from the day but let’s move along to when opposition parties had their chance to respond. Mmusi Maimane offered a stinging attack of JZ’s presidency with this speech at the SONA debate. You remember this quote right?
Please understand, Honourable President, when I use the term “honourable”, I do it out of respect for the traditions and conventions of this august House. But please do not take it literally. For you, Honourable President, are not an honourable man.
Here he is in action with five of his biggest gems:
Boom, shots fired. Julius decided to get in on the fun on as well, and you can see his full speech HERE.
Some more pivotal moments summed up in this brief video by News24:
Where does that leave us ahead of today’s SONA then? My guess is high drama, although steps will surely be put in place to prevent a repeat of last year. Whatever happens we could be in for a year-defining evening – Zuma is expected to begin his address at around 7PM, saddle up and strap in.
