Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán is facing a rather lengthy stretch in the slammer, the drug-trafficking charges filed against him in the U.S. set to put him behind bars for the rest of his life.
Rather than fight the charges El Chapo says he will plead guilty and consent to his extradition to the U.S., but that’s only if the courts decide to play ball on one condition.
This one is a real gem so get comfy and listen to this from BusinessInsider:
He doesn’t want to go to a “high-security prison,” José Refugio Rodríguez, one of Guzmán’s lawyers, [said] last week…
Rodríguez said that the jailed Sinaloa cartel chief “is willing to accept his culpability for the charges [that] the United States seeks.”
“[We would ask for] favorable [sic] conditions in order to face legal proceedings in the United States … Like? That he doesn’t arrive at a maximum-security prison …
Now given his well-documented history of escape does one smell a rat? If there’s one man whose incarceration record demands maximum security it would be El Chapo, so a demand such as this seems too good to be true.
Some allege he may be kept at Colorado’s ADX Florence, a notorious maximum security prison dubbed ‘the Alcatraz of the Rockies’:
Inmates spend their days in 12-by-7-foot cells with thick concrete walls and double sets of sliding metal doors (with solid exteriors, so prisoners can’t see one another). … Prisoners in the general population are allotted a maximum of 10 hours of exercise a week outside their cells, alternating between solo trips to an indoor “gym” (a windowless cell with a single chin-up bar) and group visits to the outdoor rec yard (where each prisoner nonetheless remains confined to an individual cage).
I’ll tell you what you’ll really want in the man’s cell – reinforced flooring, something law enforcement has failed to do in the past.
Those conditions of imprisonment do sound horrid, no doubting that, but given the atrocities the Sinaloa cartel have been responsible for over the years it’s tough to rustle up much sympathy.
