Just before 4am on Saturday morning, a quake at a magnitude of 6.4 struck the south Taiwanese city of Tainan. So far, at least 11 people have died. Many high-rises, counting around 100 homes collapsed and at least 30 people remain missing.
One of the worst incidents was the collapse of a 12-storey Wei Kuan apartment complex, home to at least 256 people. While 200 people were injured, a baby, a young girl and two adult men did not survive. 70 people were taken to the hospital.
This number could rise as many people were set to celebrate Chinese New Year and so could be visiting relatives.
There were at least five aftershocks and many buildings have been left leaning “precariously”.
