Not only is Massive Attack the greatest trip hop group, like, ever, but, having been around since the 1980s, they have offered the world some spectacular tracks. And they just keep on impressing. Their latest album release is set to defy the world of online pirating by releasing the EP through a unique app.
Going by the name Fantom the app also offers original mixes of the tracks on the EP – and that’s not all. You get the chance to create your own remixes by using an algorithm. Completely unique to the user, the app gathers information from your phone, about your location as well as movement, time of day and your surrounding to produce a mic that you can record and share online. Massive.
How’s that for innovation? But there’s more:
For those of you with Apple Watch, tap the Fantom watch app Heart Rate mode and your heartbeat will vary the harmonic and rhythmic cadences of the songs. Moving your wrist will also create different effects on tracks. If you are stationary then the mix will also reflect this…
Your individual Fantom audio mix data can be shared with others by sending pictures or video clips of your current mixes to your contacts – in turn their app will open and playback your personalised mix.
The app was developed by Adaptive audio composer Rob Thomas and said he was proud to be using data from mobile devices for something unique instead of “useless stuff, like targeted advertising”.
But what we’re producing is almost the complete opposite of that. It takes your data and creates a really great experience for you, without storing it or trying to sell you something. It’s creation in the moment and a logical avenue for artists to explore…
I think of it as quantum composing. You’re thinking about all of these different universes the music could exist in and have to design for every eventuality.
