In the wake of public pressure the FBI have released footage from the shooting of 54-year-old Robert LaVoy Finicum, the rancher who acted as the spokesman for those occupying the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon.
The real action occurs around the 9:20 mark, but you might need a little more info to go on for context.
I’m sure most of you have heard bits and bobs about this one over the past few weeks, but for the less informed here’s a little overview from Vox (read for an in-depth analysis if that’s your thing):
The apparent goal of the takeover is ultimately to induce the federal government to turn over government-owned land to local ranchers, loggers, and miners for their use.
The scary bit is that occupiers claim to be armed to the hilt, making it tricky for law enforcement to plan a strategy to overpower them without loss of life. That aerial video up top is described on BusinessInsider as follows:
[It] showed Finicum speed off in a white truck from FBI and Oregon state police and nearly strike a law enforcement officer while trying to evade a police barricade before barreling into a snowbank and exiting the car.
The grainy aerial footage shows Finicum raise his hands in the air and then turn and flail his arms moments before he is shot by an officer the FBI identified as a state trooper.
Greg Bretzing, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Portland office who narrated the video for reporters, said Finicum can be seen reaching for his jacket pocket. But a lack of focus in the video makes Finicum’s precise movements prior to the shooting difficult to discern.
There are still four occupiers holed up inside the centre, and it remains to be seen what the news of this fatal shooting does to their resolve.
