Today sees the Democratic Alliance marching in Johannesburg, a large number of supporters taking to the streets in solidarity with those who have become unemployed under Jacob Zuma’s administration.
As supporters gathered at the Westgate station in downtown Johannesburg before the march one DA ward councillor’s outfit drew much attention, David Dewes rocking up dressed like this:
The poster attached to his chest read “”jobs down the drain”, with the shower head an obvious reference to the Zapiro classics:
His outfit didn’t go down all that well as TimesLive outlines:
Dewes was asked to leave the premises as his outfit was in bad taste.
“How can you ever respect the president who came in power with over 700 charges of corruption? He has thrown this country into a serious economic dilemma with its ratings (nearing) junk status. Where is the economic development that he promised this country‚ it is down the drain‚” said an unrepentant Dewes.
However‚ he peacefully went to take off his outfit in his car and rejoined the thousands of protesters.
If you think his name sounds oddly familiar that would be because this isn’t the first time he’s landed himself in hot water. Check this out from the esteemed pages of the Roodepoort Record back in August 2014:
DA Councillor Dave Dewes has been found guilty of bringing his party into disrepute after comments he made at a fundraiser earlier the year.
Dewes was accused of making racial slurs after he used the Afrikaans words “keffertjie” (small yapping dog) and “Pekanese” (a flat-nose breed of dog).
Dewes had the following to say after he appeared before a disciplinary committee on 26 July.
“In my speech, I made reference to my absolute frustration as an opposition politician as an irritating, yapping little dog that continuously is kicked in the face whilst getting nowhere,” he explained.
“Using the words ‘keffertjie’ (to describe the barking, yapping dog) and ‘Pekinese’ (to describe the flattened face) was my using figurative language in Afrikaans.
“At no stage was there any racial slur or racist connotation. I was speaking in reference to myself. Unfortunately, people who are not Afrikaans speakers interpreted this totally incorrectly and I have been found guilty of bringing the DA into disrepute.”
Dewes also said it was unfortunate that in a racially divided South Africa an innocent remark was misinterpreted as offensive. Dewes was given a R10 000 suspended fine.
You might want to lay low Dave, the old saying goes three strikes and you’re out…
