About 42 nautical miles off the coast of Cape Agulhas, the NSRI has found the hull of a capsized catamaran. Although it is too early to say whether it is the Sunsail which went missing about a year ago, the National Sea Rescue Agulhas crew hopes it is:
The floating capsized casualty catamaran has reportedly been sighted on numerous occasions and hopes are that she is the catamaran Sunsail that has been missing for a year.
On arrival at the scene, the crew on duty took photographs of the upturned hell and then rescue swimmers free dived to investigate its markings.
No physical markings were found on the boat to assist in identifying her and the photographs were sent to the Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre (MRCC), family of the missing crew, and the catamaran’s owners to allow them to investigate further.
The suspected catamaran, Sunsail RC044-978, originally set out from Cape Town for a delivery trip to Phuket, Thailand, on 14 December 2014. The crew, South Africans Anthony Murray, Reg Robertson, and Jaryd Payne was last heard from on January 18 last year.
