The sport of tennis is under the spotlight at the moment, allegations of widespread match-fixing dominating headlines as the year’s first major tournament plays out in Melbourne.
We heard yesterday what world number one Novak Djokovic had to say on the matter, now it’s the turn of Swiss maestro and Mr. TNice Guy Roger Federer. Below from USA Today:
“I would love to hear names,” the 17-time Grand Slam champ told reporters at the Australian Open. “Then at least it’s concrete stuff and you can actually debate about it. Was it the player? Was it the support team? Who was it? Was it before? Was it a doubles player, a singles player? Which slam?’”
You and me both Roger, I understand that a full-scale investigation needs to take place but the leaked documents are from a 2008 inquiry that has long since been completed. The longer the authorities remain mum on the topic the less faith the general public will have in their intent to curb these kind of activities.
More from Novak Djokovic yesterday again:
“People are talking about names, guessing who these players are. But there’s no real proof or evidence yet of any active players, for that matter. As long as it’s like that, it’s just speculation”…
“Unfortunately there were some, in those times, those days, rumors, some talks, some people were going around,” Djokovic said on Monday “They were dealt with. In the last six, seven years, I haven’t heard anything similar.”
Yeah I’m with Roger on this one – spill the beans and tell us exactly which players have been tarnishing the game.
