If you’ve been following the Ram Slam T20 saga you’ll know the name Gulam Bodi, the player at the centre of the worst match-fixing saga to grace our shores since the devil made Hansie do it back in the day.
As more details emerge from the investigation one begins to realise just how deep the fixing may run, with the massive amounts of money thrown around proving too much temptation for many to resist. Here’s Sport24:
…four Proteas and four other players from provincial franchises were offered up to $50 000 (R830 000) a game to tailor their bowling or batting performances during the tournament.
Bodi himself stood to make as much as R150 000 in “commission” for a successful fix.
So what made Bodi so desperate to land himself what appeared to be easy money? Desperate times, desperate measures:
…Bodi was in personal financial strife last July, some three months before his first alleged approach to a fellow player.
It is believed that Bodi set up numerous meetings with players over coffee, dinner, in parking lots and even at an adult entertainment venue in Johannesburg.
That’s right, this has become so seedy that meetings were held in titty bars. Throw into the mix our national team’s woeful performances of late, add a dash of Aaron Phangiso’s in-flight behaviour and we have the recipe for a right old mess.
Protea Fire.
