Anyone who had the misfortune of watching the Proteas batting performance on Saturday knows that there is something very wrong with the team at present.
Players woefully out of form batting out of position, skipper AB de Villiers hinting at trouble behind the scenes, a management set up that looks unable to inspire any positive change, a match-fixing saga rocking the domestic T20 competition – take your pick, the whole thing is a bloody mess.
Then you can add into the mix the breaking story of Aaron Phangiso, the left-arm spinner who seems to enjoy a drink a little more than he should. This below from News24:
The international future of Proteas spinner Aaron Phangiso appears to be hanging in the balance after he was barred from a flight in an intoxicated state…
…the incident occurred when Phangiso and a few of his team-mates were travelling from India to South Africa on October 26 last year following South Africa’s ODI series win in the subcontinent.
Phangiso and his team-mates were travelling from Mumbai – via Dubai – to Johannesburg when the slow-armer behaved badly on the flight.
Phangiso, fully clad in Proteas kit, allegedly offended flight personnel and fellow passengers.
It was only after Cricket South Africa stepped in that Phangiso avoided being arrested in Dubai, pleading that he be allowed leniency and a spot on a later flight once he had sobered up.
What’s worrying is that this is Phangiso’s second such infringement, having been arrested for alleged drunk driving in April last year.
When it rains it pours, which incidentally is probably the only thing that can save the Proteas from a second successive 3-0 series drubbing.
