By now we know that taking a selfie is quite an art form. Some get it right first time (they just dreaming, though) and others take a million before they end up choosing the first one anyways. Well, last year, there were a reported 27 deaths that occurred during the process of taking selfies – and about half of them were in India. Who wouldda thunk. Here’s what went down:
In 2015, Indians taking selfies died while posing in front of an oncoming train (1, 2, 3), in a boat that tipped over at a picnic (4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10), on a cliff that gave way and crumbled into a 60-foot ravine (11) and on the slippery edge of a scenic river canal (12, 13). Also, in September, a Japanese tourist trying to take a selfie fell down steps at the Taj Mahal, suffering fatal head injuries (14).
These incidents have encouraged Mumbai police to identify more than a dozen “no-selfie zones” around India’s largest city after three young girls were swept into the Arabian Sea while taking selfies in a rocky part of the Bandra area on Saturday. Only one of the women died, but a man who jumped in to save them also died (15).
To ensure people’s safety the police have erected signs as well as deployed lifeguards. Warnings would be issued if people disobeyed.
Yet India’s Prime Minister candidate Narendra Modi takes more selfies than I do:
