September 1, 1997 will forever be remembered for the death of Princess Diana, an iconic figure who came to be loved around the world.

At the time Tony Blair was ruling the roost as British Prime Minister, with Bill Clinton calling the White House home across the pond in the U.S. Following her death the two shared a phone call, the details of which have now been made public under a Freedom of Information request.

Here are some snippets of the transcript courtesy of the Daily Mail:

That sentence ends ‘with her, she said that were it not for the boys, she’d be off the board. The country is stunned’. The conversation continues:

Some of the other things they talked about during their regularly frequent calls to one another:

  • The politicians discussed their frustrations over Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams, with Mr Clinton saying: ‘We’ve all taken our licks for Gerry’;
  • Mr Clinton revealed he was under pressure to deal with Saddam Hussein;
  • The US leader praises Mr Putin as having ‘enormous potential’;
  • The two leaders mused about the increasing threat of terrorism and having to deal with them ‘like in those old James Bond movies’;
  • Mr Clinton offered to babysit for Mr Blair while Cherie was expecting their son Leo;
  • Mr Blair calls Mr Clinton ‘mate’ while Mr Clinton refers to the Prime Minister as ‘bud’

Bromance – what a beautiful thing. Looks like they were a little wrong on the Putin front though.
