When the newlyweds returned to their flat at around 2:30am, their flat was a mess, but there was no one around – no doubt partying. However, they were woken up shortly after by their messy guests returning, along with the sound of people snorting cocaine and having sex. They decided to leave it for the next day and not interfere.
The next morning they woke up and walked into the lounge to find two naked strangers on their sofa, surrounded by empty cocaine baggies. After being caught, the guests did tidy up the flat and left a five-star rating along with a message:
Telling people this story, I find many of them are horrified—how could you let this happen? How did you not murder them? What about the police? Honestly, I think I’m lucky to have such a great story to tell about my wedding. The only lasting damage is my soiled rug, which, thankfully, Airbnb is offering to replace. (Though I did ask my dad how to clean orgy out of my rug. His answer: “Use the stuff that you use to clean car carpets.”)
Our only other disappointment was that they didn’t even extend us an invitation—it was our wedding night, after all.
Another indecent incident took place in California when an “older man” rented a house. It turned out the older man was in fact an 18 year-old who actually wanted to celebrate his birthday. The couple got news when their neighbour called them to let them in on the secret:
Sofas were outside. The TV was in my bathroom. Objects … photos, memorabilia … I have pictures of my nieces that are on my fridge that were on the floor, trampled on and torn, with shoe prints all over their cute, little faces.
The following days, the couple had kids showing up to find items they had lost.
In the UK, magazine designer Christina McQuillan rented out her apartment for just one night, but returned to find hundreds of people spilling out onto the streets outside.
We entered the property and we told her to shut it down immediately. This girl just laughed and said, ‘no, I’m holding a party’.
Damage included ripped-up floorboards and a television pulled off the wall, totalling in a cost of £3,000. Apparently it was yet another ‘NYE orgy’.
Airbnb has banned all offending guests from using the site.
We have zero tolerance for this kind of behaviour and when something goes wrong we work quickly to make it right … our Trust and Safety team has reached out to the hosts to work with them under our $1m Host Guarantee, which covers a host’s property in the rare event of damages.
