It was a happy ending in the Kruger National Park for one lion, pictures posted on Facebook leading to the animal being rescued in the nick of time.
Some tourists shared the disturbing images on Facebook groups affiliated with the park, imploring rangers and authorities to get involved in the rescue efforts. The Telegraph to get us started:
Holidaymaker Meliska Viljoen wrote on a closed group they saw the lion “in the road clearly asking for help”.
“Just reported … I really hope they find it soon,” wrote one user.
Another added: “I shared it on all the Kruger groups I could … please feel free to share this message: We are still looking to locate him to be darted and rescued.”
As more voices joined the chorus calling for ranger intervention authorities managed to track the animal down, treating the injuries after removing the snare and releasing it back into the park.
KNP said in a statement: “Upon assessment of the wounds by the vets, it appeared not to be as bad as anticipated and displayed by the images
“On behalf of KNP management, we take this opportunity to thank you all for the contribution and support we received – from when the lion was reported up to its rescue”.
Good work social media warriors, and it’s not often we get to say that.
