I suppose it shouldn’t come as that much of a surprise to us all that Star Wars has drummed up considerable interest here at home. The marketing has been relentless, but you have to feel that even without all that ad spend fans would still turn out in their droves.
Now here’s an interesting bit of info for us all to digest – South Africa was the first country in the world to screen the film, the rest of the world only opening it in theatres from Friday. That’s not the record setting bit though, with this below from EWN:
The seventh edition of the George Lucas created franchise has already beaten Fast & the Furious 7 into second place for the most pre-sold tickets to any film in South Africa.
Ster Kinekor’s Brad Knowles says most movie goers have opted to watch the film in 3D, making it the busiest release date ever at Imax.
“Our Cape Gate Imax theatre is doing exceptionally well. A lot of advanced booking has taken place. 16 December is the busiest day in Imax in South Africa’s history’s. That’s a really encouraging start of the Star Wars franchise.”
That’s right, the most pre-sold tickets in South Africa’s history. I think we can all be thankful that record doesn’t belong to a Leon Schuster movie, that’s not a good look for the country.
