A considerable amount of backlash by a community just 25km south of Los Angeles occurred after a suspicious incident took place whereby two cops shot and killed a 28-year-old father of three.
According to the police, Nicholas Robertson pointed a gun at the cops and held onto it even as they shot him. Dramatic cellphone footage shows the man on his knees – and the question as to why the cops kept shooting when he was down caused the outrage.
Awareness of the ongoing police brutality towards male African Americans has taken front and centre stage this year. One protester asked:
Do you want to tell me why, in what circumstances, it would be justified to shoot somebody on their knees.
But the investigation is proving there is more to the story than it being a typical incident of profiling. The police advanced towards the man after they received a 911 call saying the man had fired six shots into the air in a residential area before entering a shopping district.
Although he was wielding a .45-caliber semiautomatic handgun, there was no evidence that Robertson shot at the cops. However, there were 30 shots fired between the two cops.
The cops had no reason to actually shoot and kill the guy.
