I’ll admit that the other day Matilda happened to be on one of the movie channels and I caught myself watching the whole thing. Mrs Trunchbull, little Brucey eating that entire cake, Danny deVito as a dodgy car salesman – when done right a Roald Dahl book can be one hell of a movie.
Enter Steven Spielberg, who has taken on the responsibility of turning The BFG into a massive motion picture. The 1989 animated effort had its moments, but something tells me this one could up the ante. Here’s Wired:
It’s been in development since 1991 with producers Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy, and hopped around through various studios and screenwriters—at one point, Robin Williams was set to star as the titular character. But now, after over 20 years, there’s finally a debut trailer for director Steven Spielberg’s big-budget film version of The BFG, which hits theaters July 1, 2016.
Mark Rylance, who’s earning high praise for his supporting role this year’s Spielberg film Bridge of Spies, will star as the Big Friendly Giant, though there’s not much of him in this teaser. It centres mostly on the very beginning of the story, where orphan Sophie (Ruby Barnhill) discovers the giant lurking outside at night.
I like the dark feel to it, I think we’re onto a winner here.
