Here’s both a headline you don’t see very often and another shocking example of this country’s epidemic of violence against women, a senior Free State municipal officer alleged to have killed his wife and then shoved her body in the boot while he visited his folks for the weekend.
Sunday morning saw him torch the body, although two homeless people managed to catch him in the act. It is reported that the 33-year-old man in question is the ANC director of corporate services in the Tokologo local municipality. Here’s News24:
The incident happened in their home in Langenhoven Park in Bloemfontein on Friday evening. The man allegedly pushed his 26-year-old wife against the wall where she hit her head and then collapsed.
[Police spokesperson Sergeant Ian] Gaobepe said the man put her body in the boot and drove to his parents’ home in Winburg, Free State.
“[He] spent the weekend at his parents’ home while the body was still in the car. However, early on Sunday morning, he decided to drive his wife to the dumping side and burned the body.”
However, two homeless men noticed the man “burning something” and inspected it after he had driven off.
“When the two got to where the fire was, they found a body. They informed the police and gave us a description of the man and the car – one of the garages nearby assisted the police with [closed circuit television] footage that helped us realise it was the man. We found him hiding at a township house and arrested him,” he said.
The couple in question have a child together, just the cherry on top of what is already a horrific story. The mind boggles…
