If there was one silver lining to come out of the Boks World Cup loss to Japan it was that their coach Eddie Jones was headed to our shores. Jones signed on as Stormers coach before the tournament kicked off and is now a week into his three-year contract.
The problem is that the Poms are hurting from becoming the first host nation to exit the Cup at the group stages, meaning they’re now throwing some really big numbers in Jones’ direction.
The Telegraph is reporting that talks between the English RFU (Rugby Football Union) and Jones are at an advanced stage:
One report suggested on Wednesday that Jones had already accepted an offer from the RFU, who are thought to have first contacted the 55 year-old last weekend, and that he could be unveiled as early as next week.
The RFU board were updated about developments on Tuesday night but the biggest stumbling block to the deal going ahead could be the amount of compensation the governing body will have to pay the South African franchise, which will be a minimum of £700 000.
That last figure amounts to around R15 million, which is a lekker payout for the Stormers to receive when there is still time to find a replacement before the season kicks off. The RFU also have money to burn after netting a £15 million profit from hosting the World Cup, money they seem determined to spend on making Jones the first foreign coach in the country’s history.
Sport24 report that ‘UK bookmakers also believe that Jones’ move to England is a done deal and have suspended betting on the matter’, which is more often than not an indicator that their inside sources have dished out some behind-the-scenes truths.
Losing Eddie would be a massive blow to the Stormers, of that there is no doubt. When you consider the huge payout however, and the fact that they’re unlikely to pay his replacement the R5 million a year Jones signed on for, it might make financial sense to wave him goodbye.
