Yesterday morning saw the first Syrian refugees arrive in Glasgow, three flights carrying those fleeing violence back home touching down in Scottish city.
In the wake of the Paris attacks many countries have publicly spoken about reducing the number of refugees they accept, others stating they will flat out refuse them entry. How welcome it is then to see Scottish paper The National run this as their front page yesterday:
As US states scrambled to close their borders to refugees Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon proposed a different approach. Mashable reports:
“We are due to welcome Syrian refugees to Scotland tomorrow and we need to show that we are a country of compassion and acceptance. These people are fleeing their homes in the search for protection and security, and we are their refuge. We cannot let the actions of the few destroy the safety of the many,” Sturgeon said Monday.
I think we’d do well to remember that those ISIS attacks are the exact reason Syrians are fleeing in their droves, that kind of violence carried out on a daily basis in the country they used to call home.
