It’s a sad day for all rugby fans, giant of the game Jonah Lomu having passed away from a rare kidney condition at the age of 40.
Jonah managed to rack up 37 tries in 63 internationals (you can see every one of those above), although it is his 15 World Cup tries in just 11 games that most captured the world’s attention. That included a four try blitz in the 1995 semi-final against England, including the iconic moment where he steamrolled right over Pommie fullback Mike Catt.
The BBC reports:
Family spokesman John Mayhew told New Zealand television that Lomu’s death was “totally unexpected” and that he had only arrived back from the UK on Tuesday, after spending time there for the Rugby World Cup…
In an interview with the Daily Mail in August, Lomu had said he was on dialysis and hoping for a second kidney transplant.
He is survived by his wife Nadene and two sons.
It is impossible to overestimate Lomu’s contribution to the game, the winger responsible for drumming up worldwide interest in rugby and ultimately ushering in the professional era. Below are some of his career highlights, his power and pace on display for all to see.
RIP Jonah, you’ve left an indelible mark on the game both and off the pitch and will always be fondly remembered.
