It has just come out after Atio’s September 2015 network research that Vodacom is the best network in South Africa. Booooya. Vodacom outranked MTN, Cell C and Telkom on every aspect of the search, and Vodacom’s CEO, Shameel Josub, even quoted the findings in his interim results presentation.
Along with this news, it has come out that Telkom is currently conducting due diligence on Cell C in an effort to acquire the operator which would cut the number of heavy-weight mobile players in the market to three.
Should such an acquisition go through, the new mobile entity would be in a position to challenge heavyweights, MTN and Vodacom.
The country hosts a number of mobile virtual network operators (MVNO) such as Virgin Mobile, Mr Price Mobile, me&you Mobile and FNB Connect. While Virgin Mobile is targeting 1 million customers in the country, it has hovered around the 500,000 mark for a while. The other MVNOs aren’t doing well either, with me&you sitting at 6,000 customers and FNB Connect currently at 100,000 customers.
However, all of our country’s MVNOs run off of Cell C’s network, so it’s like Cell C has an extra 650,000 subscribers. Kinda.
