By now I would have thought the Barbie empire would have been brought down by its gross gender stereotyping and promotion of an unrealistic body type. I’d be wrong, and if this new advert is anything to go by they are most certainly running with the times.
Moschino is an ‘Italian luxury fashion house that specialises in ready-to-wear leather and fashion accessories’, with the Barbie doll coming at around the $150 (R2 200) mark. But wait, there’s more – if you like what Barbie is wearing you can buy the clothes in full human size, so multiply the price below by around 15 and you’re looking at the rand value.
I think Gawker does a good job of summing it all up:
What is more fierce: a Moschino Barbie or a young boy with a fauxhawk enthusing about a Moschino Barbie? Luckily, you do not have to choose—both are in the commercial above for the $150 doll. But if you did have to choose, always bet on the kid with the fauxhawk gagging, “Moschino Barbie is so fierce!”
I’ve never been more inclined to tell children to go outside and play than right now.
