Whenever I read lists like this I get goosebumps. As an Irish citizen, people are always surprised that I’m still living in Cape Town. But, dude, look around. Yeah we have massive political and social issues and things are pretty messed up, but I’m pretty happy with my situation right now. And earning pounds is not what turns me on.
Now that the rand’s value is decreasing every time Jacob Zuma opens his mouth, the Brits are more stoked than ever to visit our sun-filled country and take advantage of its scenery, just another ‘third-world’ country for them to flock to. Thank goodness they can see past this, and although the exchange rate is top of the list, the peeps over at The Telegraph listed 25 reasons as to why to pop over to the southern tip of the African continent:
1. It’s never been cheaper
With £1 currently worth more than R20 why not visit South Africa. Here’s a little graph of the sad and shocking decrease of the rand since 2010:
Year | Post Office exchange rate on November 11 | Per cent variation |
---|---|---|
2015 | 20.60 | n/a |
2014 | 16.83 | +22.4 per cent |
2013 | 14.87 | +38.6 per cent |
2010 | 10.38 | +98 per cent |
I’m going to leave this cost barometer explanation right here:
Comparing the price of essential items in various destinations, actual prices on the ground in South Africa have fallen by around 15 per cent since 2014, and by almost 50 per cent since 2010. An average three-course evening meal at a restaurant in Cape Town this weekend will set you back £24.27 – down from £28.22 last year, and £57.80 in 2010. A refreshing glass of crisp Chenin blanc will cost £1.46 – 17p less than in 2014 and 95p less than five years ago.
2. The weather is fantastic right now
Of course, as the Brits enter winter (they’re set to be visited by their first ‘named’ storm), we’re just about to enter summer. Even if the weather isn’t really ideal for our current situation, if you’re just visiting, then you might as well take advantage.
3. Because Cape Town is the world’s best city
To validate this claim, The Telegraph got a quote from a local travel expert:
You really can’t overstate the case for visiting Cape Town. First, there’s the in-your-face beauty of a craggy mountain range that drops precipitously into a glittering sea, its flanks carpeted in green. Then there’s the pristine white beaches lapped by – it must be said – a chilly Atlantic, their curves defined by giant granite boulders to bake on, and burbling mountain streams in dappled forests.
You just got those chills, right?
4. They’ve got the Big Five
Yeah we do. We also got the Little Five. And the Marine Big Five. And eight world heritage sites.
5. There are some incredible landscapes
Like the Valley of Desolation:
And Bourke’s Luck, a rock formation in the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve:
