Showing allegiance to the party where you earned your stripes can’t be faulted, but some things are bigger than the ANC dear Jacob.
So first of all let’s see what Zuma had to say while addressing the crowd at the ANC KwaZulu-Natal provincial elective conference on Saturday. This from IOL:
“I argued one time with someone who said the country comes first and I said as much as I understand that, I think my organisation, the ANC, comes first,” he reportedly told delegates at the conference.
Now of course opposition parties haven’t let this slide without kicking up a stink, the DA leading the way. National spokesperson Refiloe Nt’sekhe was in a rather unforgiving mood when addressing the media about Zuma’s comments:
“This is unbecoming of a president who has sworn an oath to be faithful to the Republic of South Africa…President Zuma should retract – and apologise – for this statement immediately. It is an insult to every single South African, a violation of his oath of office, and cannot be left unchallenged…
“It is this kind of sentiment that allows for abuse of power – to the detriment of ordinary citizens – in the name of the ANC. A president of the republic should always act in the best interests of South Africa, by promoting all that will advance the republic, and opposing all that may harm it”.
Are we even surprised any more by the things that come out of JZ’s mouth? It remains to be seen whether he will publicly comment on the allegations, although if we know our president he’s probably laughing about it right now behind closed doors.
