Last year I made an epic (fail) of a trip to Berlin. During my short stay there, I was determined to try local cuisine, but soon got over the bratwurst overhaul and all I wanted was a pie. You see, every train station, tourist attraction and well, corner, had a bakery that provided fresh bread and pastries to whoever needs at any time of the day. But they did not have pies – or sausage rolls. There was only one place that offered the meaty goodness.
Okay, okay, I know I’m talking Germany here, but my point is I can understand the revelation when finding out about something so good. Because, when I eventually got to that bakery after three weeks of searching, it was like stumbling into a leprechaun’s pot of treasure.
Back to America: The land where dreams go to hang on by a thread has just discovered what a sausage roll really is. And in case you need reminding (ahem):
a pleasantly spiced homemade sausage mixture that is easy to make up with a pound or two of ground pork shoulder and wrapped in pastry. Best served with lashes of T-sauce, of course.
Twitter seems to be the bearer of the news of America’s unfamiliarity with the cuisine:
SHAME.
You probably feel like a sausage roll right now, don’t you? Mmmm, mmmm, mmmm. Luckily, South Africa has the answer and it comes in the form of Corner Bakery, home to the best pies in the country. With more than 400 stores nation-wide, Corner Bakery prides themselves on offering a variety of fresh foods and confectionery ranges that are baked or produced on-site daily.
Get on it.
