You’ve probably been down to the grungiest, yet trendiest bar in the East side of Cape Town’s CBD – and you have probably come across Master Lolo. Apparently, every evening the nunchuck wielding karate master turns up outside Lefty’s to protect patrons’ cars – and he has become every car-thief’s nightmare.
Hailing from DRC, the 36 year old claims to be a 2nd Dan black belt, trained by his master back home from when he was 19 years old. He was forced to leave his home when the ruling party “started targeting karate masters, accusing them of being rebels” back in 2008. He decided to flee after both his master, and his master’s son were “killed by the government”.
We had to leave or we would be dead.
A video of the balaclava-clad car guard has made its way to Youtube and people are grateful for the security he provides once he arrives every afternoon at 5pm.
Our training makes us dangerous weapons, but karate is about discipline. You have the tools to kill, but you are disciplined and trained to think before reacting in any situation.
To thank him, the waiters club together and Lolo gets a cut from their tips.
People need their cars protected and I have the ability to make the area safe. I am very good at it and will do it for as long as I am needed.
The area was very quiet and he has only ever had to move people along, not fight them off.
People know not to make trouble here.
What a sweetheart.
