You’re probably thinking this sounds like something straight out of Alabama that was featured on The Jerry Springer Show. You would be wrong, the story of gay couple Nino Esposito and Roland ‘Drew’ Bosee taking place in Pittsburgh.
The couple have been together since the 1970s, and the U.S. Supreme Court’s finding that ruled same-sex marriage was legal brought them great joy. As of June of this year the two could now legally wed, although there was one rather glaring snag in the plan. Metro reports:
Three years ago, Mr Esposito, 78, and Mr Bosee, 68, entered into a father-son adoption to secure inheritance rights and other benefits – including the right to visit your loved one in hospital – afforded to straight couples but not to gay ones.
In Mr Bosee’s words, the pair ‘thought they were getting ahead of the game.’
Now because of this the pair cannot legally marry, and an Allegheny County judge has refused a petition by the Pittsburgh couple to dissolve their adoption.
‘It’s sort of ironic,’ said Mr Bosee. ‘Instead of being a help, it [the adoption] has become a roadblock, a hindrance, to what we should be allowed to do now.’
One really has to feel for a couple that have stuck it out for over 40 years and are now denied the chance to wed because of some legal technicalities. Hang in there guys, hopefully some legal minds can come to your aid in the near future.
